Why I love the Olympics

August 8th, 2008

I am sitting here in the quiet of my parent’s house in the
mountains outside of Denver, watching a couple of humming birds
drink their morning’s breakfast.

It’s been a busy few days, and I’ve taken a few moments to watch
the birds, smell the flowers, and read about the Olympics.

Not sure about you, but I am super stoked for the Olympics.  I
love seeing people push themselves to the max – all in the name
of sport.  It’s great that every four years, humanity sets aside
our differences, and just competes for the sake of competition.

It got me to thinking, which as you know by now, I tend to do a
bit of.

Why do we spend millions of dollars, just to see who is best at
something?  Is it pride, the search for glory, or is it something else?

I think at the heart of it – it is the highest form of our human
nature.  We need to measure ourselves, and continue to improve -
as a species.  It is how we really know that we are alive.

Remember when the 4 minute mile was said not to be broken?

Then somebody broke the barrier, and 4 minute miles are being
run everywhere.  Kinda interesting, no?

At our heart – we want to reach our goals, and get better all
the time.  And healthy competition gets us there.

That is why we measure ourselves against each other, and most
importantly, against ourselves.  Because constant improvement is
the best way to feel alive.

Feel alive – and enjoy the Olympics!

Reach for the top,
-Wally
