I was having thanksgiving dinner with some family and friends
the other day, and we were all really starting to enjoy the
fried turkey that we had just fried up in the backyard.

Have you ever done this?

You take a giant metal canister, fill it with pounds – POUNDS -
of peanut oil, heat it up to the point of almost catching on
fire, and then drop a giant turkey into it.

At that point, we had a serious overflow of boiling oil onto the
cement patio in the backyard.  Let me just say I’m glad it
wasn’t my house we were cleaning up at later on.

So there we were, digging into some fried turkey.  And the
conversation turned to the news.

It occurred to me, then and there, that we weren’t really
feeding ourselves.  We were feeding our addiction.

Have you ever noticed that there isn’t any good or useful news
on?  And that if you take a break from watching the news for a
week, you still find out the important stuff from other people?

But the news ticks you off.  And you become addicted to it.
I’ll be the first to admit, I get addicted to it too.

Alas, on the day of thanks, I had to excuse myself to go find a
place on the couch to sleep.  No more news talk for this guy.

It reminded me of a saying that I heard a little while back:
“What matters doesn’t change and what changes doesn’t matter.”

I refocused on the family around me, and the amazing meal of
fried turkey, and how good it was that we were all enjoying our
time together.

I think it’s important that we focus on the things that matter,
and not on the things that change.  Everything changes, but love
of family and giving thanks will always be important, no matter
what.
