See the world with fresh eyes
March 13th, 2008
A few weeks ago, I took a weekend trip to Southern California.
Standing on my friend’s deck, looking out into the glistening
afternoon sun, as it reflected off the water. It was nothing
short of awe-inspiring.
As the afternoon went on, we watched schooners, sailboats and
yachts of all sizes, sailing their way into the marina after a
long day out on the water.
In my mind’s eye, I can vividly picture that afternoon, with the
smell of the saltwater blowing in the breeze, and the sounds of
city, marina, and nature mixed together in harmony.
I’m sure you have a memory that is just like this as well.
Think for a moment to a time in your life where you can close
your eyes, and be there as if it were yesterday. Why is this
memory burned so vividly on your brain, while other memories dull
and fade so quickly?
I believe it is because of your fresh eyes.
Have you ever noticed that when you travel to a place you’ve
never been before, or even return to a place you used to be
familiar with, that you suddenly start to notice the little
things – the color and shape of a tree in the median, a statue
in the middle of town, or how the drug store has been remodeled?
Seemingly random details, formerly unknown to you, or unknown to
people who see them every day, are strikingly vivid.
Why is this? Fresh eyes.
When you have eyes uncluttered by preconceptions, uncluttered by
familiarity, you can see things as they truly are.
Take a moment today and look at something with fresh eyes. I
promise you will not be disappointed.
