Putting the heat on the phone book guys
April 6th, 2010
A few days ago I told you a little story about how nobody is using the phone book any more. I must have struck a nerve because I ended up getting a letter from a guy at the Yellow Book, telling me to check my facts.
The fact is this: When I asked around, 9 out of 10 business people I’ve spoken to have picked up their Yellow Book exactly once. And that was to drop it in the recycle bin.
If you don’t believe me, ask yourself when was the last time you used your phone book?
Here’s another fact: As of right now, about 43% of all Google searches are local. Approximately 30% of all searches are now taking place on mobile devices. The eyeballs are mobile, and they’re hungry – and there usually isn’t a phone book around to answer their question when they want it: Now.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying that the phone book doesn’t have its place – its just that every day less and less people are finding what they need there, because they’re simply not thinking to use it. And the phone book is nowhere to be found WHEN they want to use it.
A lot of local businesses don’t know this yet, and as a result, they’re missing out on tons of organic search traffic that could be coming through the door. This means they’re getting less new customers, and more money is going into the pockets of your local competition.
It’s not your fault though. Most people simply don’t know that you can setup your website to attract a bunch of specialized, local traffic. It’s a really new trend, and that’s why I’m telling you about it.
The trend is your friend – if you’re on the right end.
The good news is that now that you know, knowledge is power. There’s no reason to miss out on more traffic coming directly to your business.

Wally,
FYI… I track our lead sources. I haven’t seen a yellow page lead in over two years, and 5 years ago we were the only computer networking company with a full page ad in the yellow pages.
Recently I spoke with the guy dropping of the phone book in the plastic bag on my porch. I kindly asked him not to litter in my yard, he said, “it’s not litter, it’s the phonebook”. I picked up a McDonalds wrapper by my sidewalk and said back to him. “This is litter, it is worthless to me”, then I grabbed the phone book bag and said the same thing. He looked at me with glazed eyes, probably because his English was not good enough to understand. Huh?

Lance, that story is awesome.
You have to be where your customers are looking for you, or else you won’t be found. It’s really that simple.
