Google, the Tortise, and the Hare

When you’re driving traffic to your website, there’s
another one of Aesop’s fables to keep in mind.
It’s the story of the tortise and the hare.
Remember when the hare was boasting that he was
so much faster than the tortise, but ended up losing
the race anyway?
As a website owner, whether you like it or not, you
have a relationship with Google. And there is a race
to get more traffic traffic.
You can be like the hare, and buy Google Adwords and
other PPC programs. And if you have absolutely no
traffic whatsoever, that’s a good thing to do.
But remember the moral of the story…
“Slow and steady wins the race.”
Search Engine Optimization, which eventually puts
you on top of Google above your competition, while
driving massive amounts of “free” traffic to you…
that is the tortise. That’s how you win the race.

benefit from massive amounts of this free traffic
dripping future buyers into your bank account
forever. But first, make sure you review this.
The parable of the wind and the sun
February 8th, 2012. Filed Under: SEO, Search Engine Optimization, Traffic Driving. Tags: aesop, Jason Wally Waldron, story selling, story telling
The other day I was thinking about how complicated we like to
make things, when often they are very simple.
Take, for instance, marketing. It’s just story telling.
We’ve been doing this for ten thousand years, sitting around
campfires, telling stories, and passing down information for
many generations. That’s how we are hard wired to communicate,
and no matter what medium or channel you’re using, it’s all
about story telling.
One of the most successful story tellers of all time was a guy
named Aesop.
He had a parable about the Wind and the Sun.
It went like this…
“The Wind and the Sun were disputing which was the stronger.
Suddenly they saw a traveller coming down the road, and the
Sun said: ‘I see a way to decide our dispute. Whichever of us
can cause that traveller to take off his cloak shall be regarded
as the stronger. You begin.’
So the Sun retired behind a cloud, and the Wind began to blow
as hard as it could upon the traveller. But the harder he blew
the more closely did the traveller wrap his cloak round him,
till at last the Wind had to give up in despair.
Then the Sun came out and shone in all his glory upon the
traveller, who soon found it too hot to walk with his
cloak on.”
Notice how the wind put a bunch of energy into forcing the
issue, while the Sun simply played to his strengths and did
what he did best. That’s the way to achieve massive success.
Do what you already do best…and work to attract the rest.
One of the best ways to automatically attract your perfect
market is to invest in proven, professional search engine
optimization.
In short order, you can get an almost endless stream of qualified
leads coming directly to your door, with almost no effort on
your part.

Graphic Designer Gets Out Of The Sandbox

Today marks the first day that we’ve sent our daughter to
school…or maybe it’s day care at her age. It’s a big
milestone for her in her short life – but it’s a new year
and it’s time for everyone to stretch a bit to grow.
When you look outside of the classroom, there are lots of
places to play, including a sandbox.
It reminded me of a story that one of my customers wrote me
with… about the Google sandbox. When you are in the Google
sandbox, it really means that they’ve used a nice word saying
that Google has kicked you out of the playground.
It happens to people who don’t understand SEO and how to use
it properly. And it’s a terrible thing to have happen
because then you are invisible to the Internet.
Here’s her story…
“We had just rolled out a great new site design, and we were
really excited about all the traffic that was going to come
and see it.
Only there was one problem – Google had stopped indexing us!
We had tried to search optimize our site, and Google thought
we were spammers. We tried for months and couldn’t figure
out what was happening to our site.
Luckily, we knew there was one guy out there who could help
us. Our good buddy Jason Waldron – “Wally the Web Guy”.
We gave him a call.
After following his recommendations, Google was indexing us
within a week, the traffic started flowing in. We haven’t
looked back since!”

What this famous teenager’s 13th birthday means for you
September 27th, 2011. Filed Under: SEO, Search Engine Optimization. Tags: google's 13th birthday, google's birthday, Yellow Pages
Today is a famous teenager’s 13th birthday. And like any good
teenager, this teenager has been busy disrupting things.
You might have heard of this teenager. This teenager’s name
is Google.
It used to be that you could put a targeted ad in the Yellow Pages
and then your phone would start ringing off the hook. Long time
readers of this newsletter know those days are gone, as Google the
disruptive teenager has taken the flow of business away from
traditional marketing outlets like the Yellow Pages for almost a
decade now.
Maybe you don’t believe me.
Well, last time I checked even the Yellow Pages is trying to sell
you something other than an ad in the phone book.
Combine this with the disruptive factors of social media and
there’s a good chance that your business is literally invisible on
the Internet.
And being invisible in today’s ADD world means that you’re in
trouble.
People are onto the next big thing before you know it, averaging
under 7 seconds per website visit and whatever they’re searching
for, they’re likely finding your competitors right in the sweet
spot known as page one of Google.
This means that people who should be coming to your website, and
through your doors are going over to the other guys’ place
instead. That’s bad news.
Luckily there’s a solution to this.
For the last couple years, I’ve had a select group of individuals
who’ve worked with me to go from invisible on the Internet to
squatting on top of page 1 of Google.
One business literally went from ready to shut the doors and over
a hundred thousand dollars in debt to selling so much that they
have their products on back order in less than 12 months. That is
the power of being on page 1.
It can literally change everything for you.
There are a lot of secrets to getting a business to page 1 -
especially if you’re in a competitive market. A lot of these
secrets I’ve been sharing with you over the years…and the good
news is you’re in the right place, because I’m happy to share
these secrets in an even more in depth fashion with a select few
action takers who are ready to start crushing their competition.
In fact, you can simply go to Google right now and start buying
AdWords… and rank on top of your competition in the same time it
takes to read this email. That’s not always a bad plan, however
it is definitely the “quick fix” to a long term problem.
The smarter way to go is to take a longer term approach so that you
rank number 1 day in and day out, in perpetuity.
It’s actually an opportunity that exists for most businesses, and
you can determine pretty quickly if you’re able to rank on number
one within a couple days.
Here’s how you can determine before the end of this week if you
can start squatting on top of Google and crush your competition:
http://wallythewebguy.com/services/search-engine-optimization.html
It’s not for everyone, only those who are ready and willing to get
a steady flow of new visitors and sales from their website.
Hopefully that’s you today, and every day.
Here’s to getting found and crushing it,
-Wally

There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch
October 6th, 2010. Filed Under: Business, SEO. Tags: Business, Robert Heinlein, SEO, TANSTAAFL
Last summer I read a great book called “The Moon is a Harsh Mistress”
by Robert Heinlein. In the imagined future of the book, there is a
colony on the moon that breaks away from Earth and rebels against
unfair regulations, taxes, and rules.
Kinda like a futuristic 4th of July all over again.
One of the sayings that keeps coming up again and again is
“TANSTAAFL”…which stands for “there ain’t no such thing as
a free lunch”.
When you’re building your business with the internet, it’s
the same way.
On the internet, you hear a lot about “free google traffic”
and “free website traffic” and so on and so forth. But
that’s not really the truth.
You pay for traffic one way or another.
There’s the quick approach, where you can buy Adwords, or
get a JV promotion, or purchase advertising to send
traffic.
This one is easy to understand – you pay someone, they
get traffic for you.
Then there’s the slower, but more valuable approach of
organic search engine optimization. You find your
keywords, you optimize your site for the keywords,
and you maintain your ranking over a period of time
through the actions of creating content, and having
a maintenance plan in place.
Either of these work. In fact, doing both gets you
more and more traffic.
But you’re going to pay either way.
Paid traffic comes out of your pocket and goes to the
advertisers.
Organic traffic (or “unpaid traffic”) comes out of
your time, or your pocket to your SEO.
And that’s okay. It’s a cost of doing business.
However, don’t fool yourself. You’re going to pay to
play, one way or another.
The good news is that more traffic equals more sales
if you have the right system in place.
That’s why often times the best thing to do is take
a few minutes, identify your most valuable traffic
sources first, and then go from there.

P.S. – I heard a good saying recently. “You don’t
sit around wondering should I have a pair of shoes.
You know you need shoes. So you go and buy them.”
It’s the same with traffic to your website.
You pay for it one way or another, so it pays to
make sure you’re paying for the right type:

What web marketing topics are YOU interested in?

Lately we’ve talked about everything from growing your local business with Local SEO, to setting up your website sales system so that the gold comes to you, instead of “chasing the dollar”.
And it’s been quite a ride, but we’re just getting started.
As the Internet keeps evolving, it means that the challenges facing everyone from the mom and pop shop to the globe trotting internet marketer keep growing.
And keeping your business systems up to date can be a frustrating challenge.
The good news is that where there is frustration, there is opportunity. In my case, an opportunity to better serve you.
I know a lot about where the Internet is going, and how to use it to build your business. And I’ll give you a peek behind the curtain…I’m evolving my own business even as I write this to you, to take advantage of the next wave of changes.
However…
This knowledge doesn’t do any good unless it’s applied to the right problems.
Your problems. Your challenges. So I want to know.
What web marketing topics are YOU interested in?
I’m here to help you grow, and thrive.
Let me know where your biggest frustration is in using the web to grow your business.

Why most businesses fail (and what you can do about it)
August 3rd, 2010. Filed Under: Business, SEO. Tags: Business, SEO, United States, Wally
I just got done reading two articles that are apparently
in conflict with each other.
The first article said that over 85 percent of businesses
fail within the first five years of opening their doors.
And it gave a number of reasons that I’ll tell you about
in a minute.
The second article pointed out that despite the financial
crisis, the number of millionaires in the United States
rose a whopping 16 percent to 7.8 million in 2009.
So in the midst of a financial crisis, the number of
millionaires rose by millions of people.
Pretty interesting. Here’s my take on it.
You have the power to choose which side you’re going to
be on. And it starts by not making excuses about the
economy and the world around us.
Going down the road of excuse s never works, because
there are a lot of reasons why your business can fail.
Accountants and financial types will point out that most
businesses fail because they are undercapitalized.
Political types will blame over taxation or government
regulation for making small businesses fail.
Sales and marketing folks will point out that it’s
harder to get sales when everybody is so tight fisted.
The list goes on and on. And the danger is that it’s
easy to roll over and decide that you want to make
excuses instead of being successful.
But you’re with me on this journey, and I know that
you’re not interested in rolling over and giving up.
So it’s time for some answers.
It’s important to build as many systems around yourself,
your message, and your business – so that you can reach
your customers 24/7, and ext end your reach as far as
possible.
You want to make sure that you’re always filling the
pipeline and delivering as much value to the
marketplace as you’re humanly capable of.
As Brian Tracy says, “If you give enough people what
they want, you can get anything that you want.”
Building a website sales system around a business is
just one of hundreds of ways I’ve helped people all
over the world deliver their unique value to countless
thousands of people.
There are a million ways to thrive…click here to see for yourself.
Join me and you can do it too.
Until next time,

P.S. – A lot of folks have been asking me about SEO
and the results you can get f rom being ranked high
on Google. Let’s just say that it’s pretty much
the most important thing you can do after you have
a website. See here for details.
