Start your day with some bourbon and a rubdown
July 1st, 2011. Filed Under: Business, Internet Marketing, entrepreneurship. Tags: Business, entrepreneurship, harry s truman, independence, Independence Day, internet marketing success, internet sales success
In just a few days we here the USA will be celebrating
Independence Day, one of my absolute favorite holidays.
It’s a great holiday for so many reasons – the fireworks, the
mid-summer family and friends, the cookouts – but the most
important to me is the spirit of liberty.
Every year I make it a point to read the first part of the
Declaration of Independence, and remind myself of the spirit
behind this great nation and more importantly the spirit of
individual liberty and personal sovereignty that it represents.
Being an entrepreneur, it is important to return to the roots
sometimes and give thanks for those who came before us. After
all, none of us succeeds alone, even though when you’re running
a business it can often feel that way.
One of my favorite guys who came before us and is a great leader
was Harry S Truman. Harry came from humble beginnings in
Independence, Missouri and worked his way through an incredibly
powerful and corrupt political machine – yet somehow kept his
nose and hands clean through the whole thing. In fact, many
years after he’d made it to the presidency, someone noted that
the best proof that he wasn’t corrupt was that he was still poor.
By then, his old political co-horts were all in jail or ruined
from their corruption. But that’s a story for another time.
Harry arrived in the White House upon his predecessor’s passing
and promptly had to wind down the biggest war the world had ever
seen. He had to make tough calls like whether to invande Japan
or use a nuclear bomb. And he had to be a quick study.
To stay sharp, Harry started his day like this:
First, he’d wake up and take a brisk walk. He’d get the juices
flowing and if the reporters could keep up with his fast
pace…they were allowed to ask him questions.
Then, after starting his day and getting his thoughts in order,
he’d grab a shot of whiskey to warm the belly.
Finally, he’d get a quick massage, and get moving with the
business of the day.
This is a little different than how I begin my own days, but
there are a lot of lessons to be learned from old Harry. This
is the guy who had the sign that read “The Buck Stops here” on
his desk.
There are a lot of similarities with being in business.
To be successful, you have to be a lot like Harry S Truman.
Whiskey or not, you have to have the fire in your belly.
You have to make tough calls all the time, and you have to be a
quick study.
Most importantly, you have to realize that with you, the buck
stops here.
At the end of the day, your success as a business person and the
heights you reach are up to you. And that’s the beauty of
independence.
Enjoy your weekend,
-Wally

Are you an alien?
June 28th, 2011. Filed Under: Business, Internet Success, Success Stories, entrepreneurship. Tags: alien, Business, entrepreneurship, pawn shop, pawnbroker, Wally Web Stars
The last few days I’ve been reading Robert Heinlein’s “Stranger
in a Strange Land” about a martian who comes down to earth. He
sees everything with “alien” eyes, and stuff that is normal to
us earthlings is completely weird to him.
Well, as a happy coincidence, a couple days ago I received an
email from one of Wally’s Web Stars, Steve Krupnik, about the
same thing.
Even though he’s writing to Pawnbrokers, I’m sharing it with you
because this message applies to any business owner. You’re out
there every day creating your own success, and I applaud you for
it. But to most earthlings, your thought process and actions
might seem very alien.
Check this out and let me know what you think:
“Hi Wally,
This morning in the office I received an e-mail message from an
entrepreneur and in his message he made a statement that had me
laughing out loud. He has been on this tips list for around six
months and is a car dealer doing due diligence to enter the
pawnbroking industry. He asked me a simple question and I
provided him with the simple answer.
Funny – I also came from an automotive background.
But the statement he made that had me laughing really is
profound. He stated: “I believe your tips have helped me in my
car business as well as a few of the tips helped even in my
marriage.” Okay, some of the tips I provide you with are just
plain common sense and straight talk that could be applied to
nearly every small business. But to your marriage? Maybe so.
As a matter of fact I believe I understand completely and you
may benefit by knowing why this is. This is because many small
businesspeople – folks who are bitten by the entrepreneurial
spirit bug – do not realize how strange they appear to their
friends and family and employees and customers and
acquaintances. To many of them, YOU are an ALIEN.
A very strange being they cannot understand. Nor will they ever
understand you. And if you attempt to discuss your business and
your entrepreneurship with these friends or acquaintances or
employees or customers – or even your spouse – it creeps them
out. They do not know why you do what you do and how you handle
the risks and responsibilities of running a small business every
day.
You, the alien.
Think about it. A person who does not sign their own paycheck -
someone who punches a time clock – nearly everyone who works for
a large corporation – government employees – workers who belong
to a labor union – people who have never sold anything in their
lives – and others who have never been exposed to being an
entrepreneur or running a small business cannot and never will
understand your thought process and what makes you tick.
I’ve experienced this many times in my business life and most
likely you have too. This fact may even change the conversations
you choose to have with your spouse. You know what I’m talking
about. On the other hand, being around other entrepreneurs and
small-business owners is a real game changer when it comes to
the conversations you may be having. Big time.
Take myself for example. I realize what you need to do to make a
living and to meet your overhead every month. Because of this I
understand, respect, and appreciate you for this. Being a member
of the three balled tribe may look easy on television but, of
course, you and I know quite differently. We understand the real
realities of running a pawn shop business.
This is why so many pawnbrokers frequently expressed gratitude
to me for taking the time and effort to send out these e-mail
tips to them. I speak your language. This is also why so many
clients of mine in the Pawn Shop Advisor(tm) coaching program
experience incredible results in their pawn shop business combining my
ideas with their knowledge and experience. Because I have
thoroughly analyzed many out of the ordinary ways to really
“make it” in this industry. The pawnbroking industry.
To me you are not an alien. Just one amazing pawnbroker.
Keep your eye on the target and your mind on the goal,
Stephen Krupnik”
Thanks, Steve. I think that all entrepreneurs have felt like an
alien one time or another, and it’s important to remember that
you’re out there making it happen while most people are drifting
along through life waiting for their big break. You gotta get
out there and make it happen.
Keep up the good work, and keep making it happen.
