It was a few summers ago but I remember it like it was yesterday.
It was the middle of summer, 4th of July.
The day before, it had rained, and every thing was very green and
vibrant.
Some good friends of ours came over for a barbeque in the
backyard, surrounded by 80 year old trees, old houses, and a
blooming flower garden.
After enjoying their company and some freshly cooked steaks, we
took a walk to the city park to see the fireworks.
We saw Children on bikes, familys walking together, hippies
playing frisbee with their dogs, and old people slowly walking
around.
People of all types and stripes running around, enjoying the
park, and a moment’s reprieve from their usual busy schedules.
4th of July is a great holiday. In fact, it is one of my
favorites.
I personally like the 4th of July better than Christmas and
Halloween, and even better than my own birthday.
Because 4th of July is the only time where everybody in our
nation takes time to pause and reflect, for 15 minutes, as they
watch the fireworks, upon everything that makes the American
spirit of 1776 so great.
For me, the idea of Life, Liberty, and Happiness, is more than
something to build a nation on. It is an idea of how to live an
enlightened life.
When I look back at the founding fathers, and how grounded they
were in the principles of the 17 and 18th century Enlightenment,
and how they were able to stand on those principles to create a
new nation out of it, one that became an inspiration to the rest
of the world, I have to stop for a moment and stand in awe.
For regardless of your politics or personal feelings about how
things are run today – when you consider the historical
perspective of where the world was headed prior to 1776, and look
at where it is now, I think you’ll have to agree that a world of
possibilities was opened up to each of us because of American
revolution and the work of the Founding Fathers.
Today I tip my hat to those fine men, with names like Washington,
Jefferson, Madison, Hamilton, Franklin – and many, many others.
And as I watch the fireworks this year, and every year, I will
take a moment to reflect on the limitless possibilities that are
open to us in the world – if we only work together towards a
common vision of making it a better place.
Happy Independence Day.
May you be successful in the pursuit of your dreams, and may you
experience more of Life, Liberty and Happiness every single day.
