When I was in college, one of my roommates told me about how his
dad went from an average self-employed person to running a
really profitable business, all in a short couple of years.
The years were the early 90s, and there was a big, scary
recession going on. People were closing their pocket books,
pinching their pennies, and the new president was going to be a
Democrat. Sound familiar?
My roomate’s dad was running a cash register paper company at
the time, something that a lot of people need, but the average
joe doesn’t really think about.
What made this guy a huge success in these scary times was
following a formula that makes you a success no matter what, but
is actually a BIGGER advantage in the down times.
The formula is simple: Create a lot of value. Then deliver it.
This guy was able to take a pretty simple thing – getting the
cash registers of the world to continue running – and do a
better job than everyone else. He created a better system of
delivery, which created a ton of value – and then, most
important – he made it happen!
Contrast this with the Big 3 Automobile Beggars. They’re lining
up like pigs at a government trough because they can’t create a
good car to save their life, and now nobody wants to buy one.
They’re not following the formula.
I want to see you follow the formula and succeed, even as the
noise about the recession gets louder and louder. The best
thing you can do is make sure that you can deliver your message
to your intended audience, so that you can continue to serve
them. If you’re doing that, you’ll be like my roomate’s dad,
thriving during a recession and beyond.
It’s up to you to grab life by the horns, and the time may as
well be now. Keep creating that value, and make sure you
deliver it.
