How To Do Business Like A Drug Dealer

April 27th, 2010. Filed Under: Business, Direct Marketing, Internet Marketing. Tags: , ,

Before you send me a nastygram today, hear me out:

I’m not going to talk about breaking the law.

I’m not going to go on about how drugs are bad or good or whatever.

I’m not going to tell you to pack heat and wear your hat sideways.

However, I am going to ask you to set aside judgment for a second and be open to thinking about business in a way you might never have considered before.

Think about this for a second.

Drug Dealers are really smart business people.  Seriously, think about all the challenges that today’s drug dealer goes through to put their product out on the street and into the hands of their customers.  Here are three, to name a few:

They’re selling something that their customers want, but don’t need.

They’re selling something that is expensive – it is price prohibitive – to a group that might not be able to afford it.

They’re selling in a very competitive market most of the time.

So how does a street smart person get past these problems.

First of all, they’re selling a product that is addictive.  So often times they give away a free sample, or something of value for free.  This gets people hooked, and they now want something that before they didn’t even know they needed, but now they need it all the time

Next, they’re selling something that is expensive.  But they’ve given their customers a taste and a good percentage chooses to keep coming back for more, because they are getting some type of value out of the exchange.

Third, they find themselves in a very competitive market.  You end up with territories and circles of influence, and people talking and referring their friends to “their guy”.  (We’ll ignore the crime part here for sake of argument, ok?)

Still with me?

Now replace the words “Drug Dealer” with “Direct Marketer” or “Small Business Owner”.

We’re in the same boat here.

It’s crowded and competitive on the Internet today.  So you’ve got to do whatever you can to get people in the door, get them a free sample of what you’re delivering – and get them hooked.

There are a lot of different ways to get people in the door.  And there are a lot of ways to keep people coming back to you for more.

But…

The first step to do this is to make sure you’re being found.  Without this, you’ve got nothing.

How To “Keep It Real” Online

April 20th, 2010. Filed Under: Internet Marketing. Tags: ,

In the late 90s, when I was a college student living with four other guys, there was always a television on playing MTV.  And one of the lines that MTV always had was “keep it real”.

Back then and even now, I still think it’s funny because I imagine a boardroom of middle aged television executives sitting around a board room figuring out how to “keep it real”.

The good news is that for you and I, keeping it real is no problem.  And the internet just makes it easier.

We’re able to communicate in a one on one manner and have a real person to person connection that was unavailable just a few short years ago.

The last couple years, as video is growing easier to use on the web, it is now easier than ever to keep it real.  You can be yourself and toss up a video of you, your dog, whatever you want really – and it all can work for you.

The whole idea is to meet people half way, and insert yourself into the conversation that they’re already having in their head.

Just last week, I tossed up a video to answer a question that I get all the time…you can view it here:

It doesn’t look like it was produced by Disney, and that’s the point.  This is a real answer to a real question that I get almost every day.

I’ll bet your customers ask you questions all the time.  And I’ll bet you know how to answer them.

You can do the same thing with your own videos with just a little time and effort.  Let me know how I can help.

Here’s to being yourself,
-Wally

P.S. – 10 million videos were watched on YouTube.com last month.  9 million searches were done on Google.  That’s for real.

Putting the heat on the phone book guys

April 6th, 2010. Filed Under: Business, Internet Marketing, Mobile Marketing. Tags: , , ,

A few days ago I told you a little story about how nobody is using the phone book any more.  I must have struck a nerve because I ended up getting a letter from a guy at the Yellow Book, telling me to check my facts.

The fact is this: When I asked around, 9 out of 10 business people I’ve spoken to have picked up their Yellow Book exactly once.  And that was to drop it in the recycle bin.

If you don’t believe me, ask yourself when was the last time you used your phone book?

Here’s another fact:  As of right now, about 43% of all Google searches are local.  Approximately 30% of all searches are now taking place on mobile devices.  The eyeballs are mobile, and they’re hungry – and there usually isn’t a phone book around to answer their question when they want it:  Now.

Now, don’t get me wrong.  I’m not saying that the phone book doesn’t have its place – its just that every day less and less people are finding what they need there, because they’re simply not thinking to use it.  And the phone book is nowhere to be found WHEN they want to use it.

A lot of local businesses don’t know this yet, and as a result, they’re missing out on tons of organic search traffic that could be coming through the door.  This means they’re getting less new customers, and more money is going into the pockets of your local competition.

It’s not your fault though.  Most people simply don’t know that you can setup your website to attract a bunch of specialized, local traffic.  It’s a really new trend, and that’s why I’m telling you about it.

The trend is your friend – if you’re on the right end.

The good news is that now that you know, knowledge is power.  There’s no reason to miss out on more traffic coming directly to your business.

P.S. – The first 3 people who sign up to increase their local search traffic are going to get special pricing…and a ton of free resources to make sure that they beat their competition to the punch.
