The Blue Whale Strategy

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

Melinda and I are getting ready for a big trip this weekend,
travelling across the country for a friends wedding, so it’s
been a little hectic around the house.  Last night to unwind, I
decided to pop in a DVD about blue whales.

I figured that if nothing else, the soothing images of large
mammals swimming and splashing around in the ocean would help me
calm down a bit and send me into dreamland a happy camper.

Well, it did indeed do that, but first I learned a few things.

If you have a 5th grader in the house, you probably already know
everything that I’m about to pass on to you. But if you don’t,
you probably forgot some of these fun facts just like I did.

For instance, did you know that blue whales first were land
animals, that then migrated back to the sea?

And did you know that a blue whale could communicate with
another whale – via sound – from the Antarctic halfway around
the globe up to the Bering Sea?

Just another amazing example of nature showing us the way.

If you’re familiar with the Blue Ocean Strategy – it is simple.
Find a new market, and begin to sell to it.  A Blue Ocean is
free from competitors.  Looks like the whales figured that one
out already.  A few million years ago.

Communicating halfway around the globe?  Humans have only been
doing it for about a hundred years.  Seems whales got the splash
on us that time too.

Of course, now that we have fancy things like email and
blogging, we’re catching up. But they showed us the
way for sure.

If you’re as smart as a blue whale, and have an untapped market
you’re ready to communicate with – you’ll need a way to do
that.  Swim over here and check out some details.

Splish splash,
-Wally

P.S. — Because of our ships and other vessels, whales can’t
communicate halfway around the world anymore.  There’s too much
noise.  Here are more ideas for you to stand out from the
crowd.

It pays to be different (a story about DEVO)

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

Back before I was born, my parents lived outside Akron, Ohio.
They lived in an area of Ohio known in the seventies for a bunch
of stuff that nobody was proud of.

The Kent State shootings, the shrinking tire and steel
industries, the rivers that were on fire.

Oh, and Dennis Kucinich.

But there was one thing happening in that area that was going on
that I’m really proud of.  And that was the creation of one of
the strangest bands ever – DEVO.

You see, before D E V O was a household name, known for their
weird energy domes (um, flowerpots on your head?) and singing
whip it – they were a bunch of guys out of college having fun
with a strange new wave punk sound.

My dad used to play ping pong with one of the guys from the band
- and whip him.

Devo was a word that stood for “De-Evolution” and they built up
a bunch of stories around themselves.  They were recruited by
some strange General and his assistant, Booji Boy.  I don’t even
remember what their purpose was, if there was even a purpose to
begin with.

The point was that we as humans had devolved instead of
evolved.  I’ll leave it up to you to decide.

The great thing about DEVO, whether you like them or not, is
that they’re memorable.

They’ve made a career out of playing strange music, wearing
plastic cups on their head, and fake radiation suits.  Laughing
their way to the bank and having a great time on the way.

They have a memorable look, sound, and storyline.

So should you.

And I am sure that you already do.  When you spend a number of
years going through life’s experiences, you begin to build up a
back catalog of stories, experience and value that nobody in the
entire universe has.  It is unique to you, and whether you know
it or not, people want to hear about it.

Of course, it’s not your job to make everyone like you.  But if
you want to be successful, it’s your job to get the word out
about what you’re doing, and to tell your special and unique
story.

If a bunch of dudes from Akron who call themselves DEVO can do
it, so can you.

Reach for the top,
-Wally

P.S. – The best way to get your story out to a huge audience is
through a powerful method called the “website sales system”.
