Eliminate your competition in one easy step

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

Today I picked up a book from my success library, and began
reading.  A few years ago I discovered that the most successful
people I know – those who I look up to – have success libraries.

You know the old saying, “Find someone who is successful and
duplicate what they did” – well, I took it to heart.

As I began to read, I got excited.  Because I was reminded of a
principle that I had known before, but not recently thought
about.

The quote that I read said this:  “A man’s way of doing things is
the direct result of the way he thinks about things.”

Think about how simple, yet profound this statement is.  Your
thoughts, which you can control, create your actions.  Now how
can we apply this to business?

A lot of talk is going on out there about “Recession” and
“Competition” from overseas, and I’m sure by now you know that
the dollar is crashing, and all these other things.  But is
everybody in this boat together?

Let’s come back to the quote for a moment.  “A man’s way of doing
things is the direct result of the way he thinks about things.”

So you find yourself thinking that your industry is
ultra-competitive.  You feel like you’re being squeezed out by
all the other competition.  Seems everywhere you turn, you see
advertisements from your competitors.

There are a couple ways you can go with this.  First, you could
get stressed, and compete for all the same clients as everyone
else.

Or, you could GET CREATIVE!

Creativity is the only way to rise above the competition, until
you don’t have any competition at all.  You were created with
unique characteristics, an individual among the herd.  But if you
don’t stand out from the herd, nobody ever knows this.

The most successful people are individuals to the core.  Think
about Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Airways (and builder of
the world’s first public spaceport).  Unique as can be, and he’s
going to be sending people to outer space soon!

Does Richard Branson have any competition?  Heck no, there’s only
one.

So what is the secret to eliminating all your competition:
Change the way you think!  Once you realize you don’t have any
competition, and you are free from those shackles, how much more
successful do you think you’ll become?

Sounds crazy, I know.  But it’s the first step on a long journey,
and an important one.

Snow today, gone tomorrow

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

It is spring here in Colorado, and that means it is time for
April showers.  But unlike some other places I know of, April
showers means a big dumping of snow!

The other day I woke up and found myself taking pictures in my
backyard, it was so beautiful.   And I’m glad I did.  I
captured some pretty cool pics of the snow on the branches.

I’m glad I took these pictures.  It reminded me of a lifelong
lesson about opportunity:  The door of opportunity does not
stay open for long.  But those who walk through the door of
opportunity, see many more doors opened for them.

Not 3 hours later, I walked outside, and all the snow had
melted.

That’s Colorado for you.

It just goes to show, that it was worth taking the opportunity
to grab those pictures.

Every time somebody visits your website, they have an
opportunity to grow closer to you or get farther away.

Depending on how your site is designed, you might be
inadvertently slamming the door shut on them, without even knowing it.

Just like the snow, your website visitors can fall right out of
the sky – but melt away just as quickly!

The good news is that by following a successful blueprint that
has worked for over 10 years, you can be absolutely sure that
your site is not pushing people away.

If you want to follow the blueprint of success, and start
attracting more customers through your website, then you have
to walk through the door of opportunity, before it gets away.

Quality is the solution to pollution

Monday, April 7th, 2008

I just got done reading an article about a giant trash heap that
is floating in the Pacific ocean.  It is twice the size of Texas,
and growing bigger every day.  Seems that the ocean currents send
all the trash into a big pile, so big that you can see it on a
satellite image.

Anyway, it reminded me of a saying that I heard a while ago, that
I really enjoyed:

“Quality is the solution to pollution.”

Think about this for a moment.  How many times have you said
“they don’t make ‘em like they used to” when referring to a piece
of equipment that breaks way too soon.  Really what we are
saying, though, is “this thing doesn’t do what I want it to!”

It’s the same with a website.  Most of what you see on the web
these days is the equivalent of a Texas sized trash heap.  Visual
pollution, I call it.  Been to Myspace lately?  Most of the stuff
on there has me grabbing for old vitamin I – that’s right,
Ibuprofen.

Quality websites are not an eyesore.  They’re easy to read, and
easy to navigate.  They’re easy to find.  And they’re quick to
download.

Why?

Because if your website doesn’t have these qualities, people
leave.  And when people leave, you don’t make a sale.

A lost visitor to your website is like the kid with the broken
toy on Christmas, screaming to themselves “this thing doesn’t do
what I want it to!”

To be a part of the solution to visual pollution, work with Wally
